Richard C. Baynosa, MD FACS, is a distinguished Tenured Professor and the Founding Chair of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, specializing in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery. He is also the Chair of the Department of Surgery at University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, the region’s only Level 1 trauma center and burn center, as well as serving as the Chief of Plastic Surgery at Mountain View Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Baynosa’s practice is renowned for its comprehensive approach, particularly in advanced aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, including DIEP and perforator free flaps as well as a wide range of cosmetic breast procedures, from augmentation to revision surgery. He has been instrumental in bringing DIEP free flap breast reconstruction to Nevada, training or recruiting all plastic surgeons in Las Vegas who currently perform it.
Dr. Baynosa’s expertise extends to robotic surgery techniques in pelvic reconstruction, where he is internationally recognized as a pioneer. He has performed more Robotic Rectus Abdominis Muscle (RRAM) flaps than anyone globally, with his work published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Journal of Clinical Medicine. He has also been recognized as an innovator and leader in utilizing acellular dermal matrices, fat grafting, and neurotization in breast reconstruction and has participated in several clinical trials and studies in these areas as well as giving invited lectures around the world on these topics. A graduate of UCSD School of Medicine, he completed his residency in plastic surgery and fellowship in hand and microsurgery at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He further honed his skills with a fellowship in Perforator Flaps and Super-microsurgery at the University Hospital of Ghent in Belgium under the guidance of Dr. Phillip Blondeel and Dr. Moustapha Hamdi. Dr. Baynosa’s practice also specializes in immediate oncoplastic and post-mastectomy breast reconstruction as well as patients with previous breast reconstruction failures due to radiation or infection, often collaborating with his wife, Dr. Jennifer Baynosa, a Professor of Surgical Breast Oncology at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV. He actively participates in numerous regional and national committees including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and the American Association of Plastic Surgeons. He has served as a Founding Board Member and Past-President of the Mountain West Society of Plastic Surgeons and currently serves as the Chief Medical Editor of Plastic Surgery News, Editor in Chief of the ASPS Plastic Surgery Education Network, Chair of the ASPS Finance and Investments Committee, and was recently appointed as ASPS Education Governor – Breast Section
