Dr. Babak J. Mehrara is a world-renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon with over three decades of clinical and scientific leadership in cancer reconstruction. He serves as Chief of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgical Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) and holds the Peter G. Cordeiro Endowed Chair in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Mehrara earned his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed residencies in general and plastic surgery at New York University Medical Center. He also trained in advanced microsurgery at the University of California, Los Angeles.

His clinical practice focuses on complex breast and facial reconstruction, lymphedema surgery, and microsurgical techniques such as perforator flap reconstruction. He is widely recognized for pioneering approaches that restore form and function for patients affected by breast cancer, head and neck cancers, and other conditions requiring reconstructive solutions.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Mehrara leads a nationally funded research program investigating lymphatic regeneration and the prevention and treatment of lymphedema—a common and challenging aftermath of cancer surgery. His laboratory bridges basic science and clinical innovation to improve outcomes for patients worldwide.

Dr. Mehrara is an internationally invited speaker and author of numerous peer-reviewed publications. He has been consistently recognized among America’s Top Doctors, reflecting his impact on plastic surgery and patient care.
